Strategy for better records

Once you're comfortable with the rules, it's time to chase records. In Classic your record is how many cells you opened; in Time attack it's how fast you finished. Good play looks different in each mode.

Key questionWhere are the mines?Where are the mines, and which cells does the path need?

The last row is the big one. In regular minesweeper, opening a cell you know is safe is always a win. In Exit Mine's Classic mode, leaving a safe cell closed is often the better move.

Classic: open fewer cells

1. Know the minimum before you start

The entrance is the bottom-left corner and the exit the top-right. Since you can only move up, down, left, or right, any path on an N×N board needs at least N−1 steps right and N−1 steps up — 2N−2 cells in total (not counting the entrance, counting the exit). That's 18 cells on 10×10 and 36 on 19×19. Detours around mines make real paths longer.

The "shortest safe path" on the clear screen is calculated knowing where every mine is. You'll often need to open a few cells off the path just to get information, so matching it exactly is hard. Finishing a few cells above it is an excellent record.

2. Make information cells and path cells the same cells

The most efficient cell is one that's part of your path and gives you new information. If two cells would tell you the same thing, pick the one toward the exit that your path can use. Open cells away from the path only when you can't progress otherwise.

3. Don't celebrate zeros

In regular minesweeper a 0 opens everything around it automatically. Here it doesn't — it only tells you that the surrounding cells are safe, and you choose which ones to open. Get in the habit of opening just the one or two cells around a 0 that lead toward the exit, and your record will drop noticeably.

4. Flags are free

Flags don't count as opened cells. Flag every mine you confirm so you can apply "flags = number" instantly — and so you never open a mine by accident.

5. Work backward from the exit

The exit is guaranteed safe from the start, so open it once your path is about halfway there. The numbers around it will decide the last few cells of your path. Growing the path from both ends and meeting in the middle cuts down on wasted detours.

Time attack: finish fast

In Time attack, the number of cells you open doesn't matter. It's all about cutting thinking time.

The time limit starts at 1 minute 30 seconds in stage 1 and grows by 20 seconds per stage. The timer turns orange under 30 seconds and red under 10, so when the color changes, focus on finishing the path.

As the stages grow

Later stages have bigger grids, and mine density rises from 14% to about 21%. With more mines, zeros get rarer and pattern reasoning like 1-2 and 1-2-1 matters more. If you're stuck on later stages, replaying earlier stages in Classic to practice patterns is the fastest way forward.
